Last night DROM was electric with anticipation for NBBR headliner Bj The Chicago Kid. Energy was intensified by opening acts Tiffany Stevenson, Sahlence, and FLAMM. For the second time, I had the pleasure of experiencing the raw talent Tiffany Stevenson’s live performance. The powerful yet delicate voice seamlessly subdues the senses and rocks your body to any tune Stevens sings. Effortlessly captivating the audience the talented beauty sang classic covers, and her iTunes single, “Old Thing”. Stevenson has stepped from behind the curtain to pursue a long overdue solo career, after a successful run as a touring background vocalist for Kanye West, legendary Stevie Wonder, Kelly Rowland and many more.
A tough act to follow Stevenson set the tone for the evening, but high energy Sahlence came to conquer. Sahlence, a lively performer picked up the room with uptempo, clap along original jams. In addition to a vivacious, and infectious personality Sahlence sent the audience soaring with every high and low note, as she effortlessly flaunted her vocal range. From the time she set foot on stage until she danced off, Sahlence’s energy was on 1000 all night! And just when you thought it couldn't get any better, FLAMM took stage. Just him, the mic, and his looper. FLAMM wowed the crowed with flawless vocals, and genius craftsmanship as he instantly sang, and recorded beatbox beats and background vocals for his set on the spot. The male vocalists repertoire ranged from classic R&B, to legendary Reggae, instantly resurrecting a Caribbean wine and bogle through the crowd.
The night's lineup was nothing short of spectacular. “All the Artists were amazing. Definitely what the industry needs right now. That fresh talent is undeniable”, said Def Jam A&R. Bj The Chicago Kid took the stage, and truly owned the atmosphere. Chicago’s very own came to perform, and that he did. Showcasing both his percussion and vocal talent, BJ’s performance left an unmatched impression on New York City. Showing up to DROM as a BTCK fan, I was taken back by just how talented Bj is vocally.
Bj’s Motown release “In My Mind” is a timeless compilation of iconic Motown R&B sounds with a contemporary twist. With tracks like “Turnin’ Me Up”, Bj lays underrated vocals over what sounds like your grandma's favorite Saturday vinyl. The album also includes fan favorite “Church” ft. Chance The Rapper, “The New Cupid” ft. Kendrick Lamar, and “The Resume”. Without a doubt, Bj The Chicago Kid is on the heels of fellow Chicago native Chance, and Mr. West.
