It's still Black History Month and another #BlackFriday is upon us! RECESS is in session guys and gals. This 6-month-old sports bar is the ultimate adult playground. 29-year-old Markus Hunter, owner and general manager of RECESS, is a Greensboro native and James Madison graduate. After 5 years of software sales, Markus decided he wanted to do something for himself.
Markus came up with the playtime concept by way of his craving for a unique marketing angle; he yearned to create a more engaging social environment for adults. As a first-time business owner, Markus was shocked at the initial buzz his business garnered. The open floor plan of the vintage board game themed venue offers an inviting space to play childhood favorites such as Operation, Mancala, and the anxiety-inducing, Perfection.
A former athlete bred from humble beginnings, Markus doesn't shrink at signs of trouble. He described his only difficulty thus far as simply learning to delegate and keep traffic up during the colder months. He takes a very stern and disciplined approach to running and growing his business with a "no excuses" and "do the work" attitude. Markus prides himself on the welcoming, fun atmosphere RECESS offers. He enjoys building a rapport with customers as they enjoy $2 Taco Tuesdays and beer. He states, "people don't buy from people they don't trust."
With a fully stocked bar, RECESS offers a variety of delights to tantalize any palette. Stop by for 1/2 Off Wings and Wine on Wednesday. Thursdays, drop in for a $6 Jack Daniels, or a $10 Rum Bucket. And if you're really about THAT LIFE, frequent on Fridays for $20 fish bowls and $6 Tito's! If you're a brunch-er, catch $15 bottles of house champagne on Sundays.
RECESS is also available to book for social and corporate team building events. You and your coworkers can politely destroy your boss in a game of Jumbo Jenga, Hungry Hungry Hippos, and giant-size Connect Four.
When asked about his future plans for RECESS, Markus expressed his desire to grow by at least 20% annually and open another location in the next 3-5 years. Let's continue to patronize this BOB and see it to its one year anniversary this August.
